Part of Me - Katy Perry

Days like this I want to drive away
Pack my bags and watch your shadow fade
You chewed me up and spit me out
Like I was poison in your mouth
You took my light, you drained me down
But that was then and this is now
Now look at me

CHORUS
This is the part of me
That you're never gonna ever take away from me, no
This is the part of me
That you're never gonna ever take away from me, no
Throw your sticks and your stones
Throw your bombs and your blows
But you're not gonna break my soul
This is the part of me
That you're never gonna ever take away from me, no

I just wanna throw my phone away
Find out who is really there for me
You ripped me off, your love was cheap
Was always tearing at the seams
I fell deep, you let me down
But that was then and this is now
Now look at me

Now look at me I'm sparkling
A firework, a dancing flame
You won't ever put me out again
I'm glowing, oh whoa
So you can keep the diamond ring
It don't mean nothing anyway
In fact you can keep everything
Yeah, yeah
Except for me

CHORUS (2x)

Meaning, Main Idea, and Message of the Song

Based on the complete lyric above, I conclude that the song tells us about a girl's celebratory moments after regaining self confidence. Before the moments come, she was very depressed. A boy she loved and adored much has betrayed her love. The betrayal took everything good in her. Yes, it nearly broke her into pieces. Fortunately, she still has a little faith in her heart. It is this little faith that finally saves her from falling apart. Now she is fine and very optimistic to live her new life. Disappointment is yesterday.

Main Idea and Message of Each verse
As you can see, the song consists of four verses with the chorus part repeated three times. The following paragraphs are the main idea and message of each verse of the song.

The first and opening verse tells us about the bitter memory that the girl has in mind while she remembers her past experience. The feeling is perfectly represented by three lines in the verse: "you chewed me up and spit me out, like I was poison in your mouth. You took my light, you drained me drown." All the lines are figurative in nature which can be interpreted as follow: the boy once loved her. They built a romantic relationship. However, the relationship did not last long. The boy left her on the reason that she was not good and appropriate for him. This made her feel down and lost self confidence after his leaving.

The next verse, the chorus part, is the girl's statement to herself and to the boy that what he has done does not actually take anything away from her. It's true that she was down. It's also true that the lost her confidence to face the world. But she still has faith in her heart. And the boy would not be able to take it away even if he throws "sticks and stones. Bombs and blows."

The next verse, basically contains the same message as the first one. Only the words used here are different. However, the first two lines in this verse, "I just wanna throw away my phone away. Find out who is really there for me" give additional message. As you can see the lines use present tense which indicates that even though she has risen from difficult times, it doesn't mean that she has totally got over the pain. And as any other human being, she needs a friend, a true friend to support her and help her through that difficult times.

Meanwhile, the fourth verse shows her strong intention to have a better life. She promises that whatever the boy had done in the past and will do in the future, she will not be affected as now she has regained her self confidence. Like a firework, she is now sparkling, dancing, and glowing.

Well, that's my interpretation of Katy Perry's Part of Me song. Any comments will be highly appreciated.

  1. Russell Brand left her because he's clean and sober and she parties too much. That's it, it's not too deep.
