Primadonna - Marina and The Diamonds

CHORUS
Primadonna girl, yeah
All I ever wanted was the world
I can't help that I need it all
The primadonna life, the rise and fall
You say that I'm kinda difficult
But it's always someone else's fault
Got you wrapped around my finger, babe
You can count on me to misbehave
Primadonna girl

Would you do anything for me?
Buy a big diamond ring for me?
Would you get down on your knees for me?
Pop that pretty question, right now baby

Beauty queen on a silver screen
Living life like I'm in a dream
I know I've got a big ego
I really don't know why it's such a big deal though

And I'm sad to the core, core, core
Every day's such a chore, chore, chore
When you give, I want more, more, more
I wanna be adored

CHORUS

Fill the void up with celluloid
Take a pictureE, I'm with the boys
Get what I want 'cause I ask for it
Not because I'm really that deserving of it
Living life like I'm in a play
In the limelight I want to stay
I know I've got a big ego
I really don't know why it's such a big deal though

Going up, going down, down, down
Anything for the crown, crown, crown
When the light's dimming down, down, down
I spin around

CHORUS

Meaning, Main Idea and Message of The Song

Based on the complete lyric of the song above, I conclude that this song describes the life of a spoiled person. The word Primadonna here, I guess, does not refers to the real primadonna or a superstar. It refers to that spoiled person, in this case, a girl, who always demands special treatment from people around her. Just like a queen. There is no single of the lyric which explains the cause of that bad attitude. But, I guess the girl's bad attitude is caused by her parents' mistreatment since the time she was born. It happens to some friends of mine. Because their parents mistreated them, they grow as spoiled childen. When they are grown up, they are still like kids whose demands must always be fulfilled.

Back to the song, so how is the life of the girl as described in the lyric? Particularly, how is the girl? Well, based on the lyric of the song, the girl is very greedy. She needs nothing but the world (verse 1/chorus). She always misbehaves anytime and anywhere (verse 2). She is demanding (verse 3). She's got a big ego (verse 4). She is never satisfied (verse 5). She is selfish (verse 6). And she is also ambitious (verse 7).

Well, that's my interpretation of Marina and The Diamonds's Primadonna song? Feel free to comment. YOur comments are highly appreciated.

  1. I disagree about the part of the parent's mistreatment part. Primadonna does not have ANYTHING to do with the her as a person. Primadonna is part of an album by Marina and the Diamonds. This album is called "Electra Heart" which is about a girl who falls in love but never gets hurt. This explains HER personality in relationships. She gets what she wants, she believes she deserves it, she always wants more, and if you can't give it to her, she's done with you. She's high ambitious in relationships. She wants love. And love of any kind is good to her.
