Next To Me - Emeli Sande

You won't find him drinking under tables
Rolling dice or staying out til' 3
You won't ever find him be unfaithful
You will find him, you'll find him next to me

You won't find him trying to change the devil
For money, fame, for power, out of greed
You won't ever find him where the rest go
You will find him, you'll find him next to me

CHORUS
Next to me - wooh hooo
Next to me - wooh hooo
Next to me - wooh hooo
You will find him, you'll find him next to me

When the money's spent and all my friends have vanished
And I can't seem to find no help or love for free
I know there's no need for me to panic
'Cause I'll find him, I'll find him next to me

When the skies are grey and all the doors are closing
And the rising pressure makes it hard to breathe
When all I need's a hand to stop the tears from falling
I will find him, I'll find him next to me

CHORUS

When the end has come and buildings falling down fast
When we've spoilt the land and dried up all the sea
When everyone has lost their heads around us
You will find him, you'll find him next to me

CHORUS (2x)

Meaning, Main Idea and Message of The Song

One of God's greatest gifts to us, human beings, is the presence of true friends in our life. Having one of such a kind will make our life complete. With their companion, there's nothing that we couldn't face. They will always be with us through good and bad times. When we are down, they are the ones who will fix us. When we are excited, they could take a place to control our excitement.

Of course, the true friends here may refer to our spouse, parents, siblings, or mates. No matter what kind of relationship they have to us, as long as they are true to us, they will be our true friends whom our heart turns to. Of course, it will be better for us if we could build such kind of friendship with everyone. But, if we couldn't find it in all people we know, finding it in one of them is enough. And sure, it will be much better if that person is our spouse or lover.

Well, this Emeli Sande's Next To Me song seems to me to tell us about A woman's admiration to her true friend, her lover. All the verses, except the chorus part, desribe how her lover is. So how is he? The first, he is a faithful man. He isn't an alcoholic who would roll dice and stay out very late (verse 1). The second, he is not greedy and is not easily got infulenced by people around him who sometimes have bad habits (verse 2). The third, his love is pure and true. He doesn't love her for her money. So, he will never leave her especially when he is bankrupt (verse 3). Related to the fact that he is faithful, he is ready to accompany her through good and bad times. When the pressure in her life gets bigger and she needs someone to help her, he will be there (verse 4). Even when the time ends, when everyone doesn't care of her anymore, he is the one who is beside her (verse). And all that quality is summed in the chorus part: next to me - wooh hoo (3x), you will find him next to me. Yes, he seems to be her true lover.

Well, that's my interpretation of Emeli Sande's Next To Me song. Feel free to speak up your mind in the comment box.

  1. this song does not seem to be about a person because that would make a human being perfect! and NO ONE is perfect at the end of the song she talks about the end of the world, there is only one who could face the end of the world with anyone of us and that is My LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST! HE is the only one who I will always find next to me, I love my husband but even he has done some or most of the things in this song that she says HE wouldnt do. I dont know anyone and have NEVER heard of anyone who has found a perfect soulmate or lover. JESUS is the way the truth and the light no one come to the Father except through HIM. Find JESUS and then maybe you will know what she is talking about!

    2. Please if you have nothing smart to comment then do not put anything at all. I may be a Christian, but I will not sit here and judge others and if the "christians" you have encountered do this then apologize sincerely because that is not what our faith is about and those people are unfortunately ignorant as to what being Christian is really about. This comment is also directed to Maja.

    4. to "trust Christ" you go girl! I 100% agree with your response. If we sing a song like that to a man, well the song will fade away and be untrue because no man will do everything that song says. Honestly if this song is not dedicated to Jesus I don't want to listen to it, because than its a fake ignorant song. No man on earth can ever be that perfect. and if it isn't about Jesus, the song actually dismisses God and make a man more important.

    5. The aids comment shows how little you know about the ruler of this world. Christ will come to correct the aids situation not give it.

    6. Jesus Christ is the one "Next to Me" in this song. For those who know Jesus, knows what I mean. For those who do not know Jesus yet, I pray that you will know Him soon. :)

    9. I ALSO FEEL LIKE THIS SONG IS ABOUT CHRIST. AND YES IT COULD BE 50 50. IF YOU FEEL LIKE CHRIST IS THE ONE WHO IS NEXT TO YOU ALWAYS GO FOR IT. IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT'S SOMEONE WHO MAKES YOU FEEL THAT WAY GO FOR IT. IN REALITY PEOPLE HEAR MUSIC AND MAKE IT THEIR OWN STORY.LET'S JUST ENJOY MUSIC LIVE LIFE AND BE HAPPY NOT HATERS.

    10. Seriously how would this be a gospel song. Why would she even refer to God as drinking under tables and gambling. In her interview she stated it is about a person. And yes some of us have found our soul mate and yes no one is perfect but even then that doesn't mean they will not always be there for us.

      Delete
    11. No one is perfect but that doesn't mean that we can't find someone who is our version of perfect. To those "christians" that say that this song can't be about a man a are wrong. This song describes my spouse perfectly. He doesn't drink or gamble. He doesn't stay out late. He's always by my side. So maybe you haven't found your "perfect" mate but that doesn't mean he/she doesn't exist. And no where in the song does she mention him/her being perfect.

  2. oh lord you christians have to make everything your way... have some humility to accept it s 50 % 50 and you may be wrong! there may be no god!! she said in interviews this is about her fiance, end of story.. but for you it will always be about your invented god..

    1. Humility Maja? Really? Look at your last line. "But for you (Christians)it will always be about your invented god). I can't find anything in that line that shows respect to someone else's beliefs, which is a part of humility. Although I'm a believer in a higher power, I don't go around slamming other people and what they choose to believe. As you find it frustrating that Christians have to make everything their own way, I find it frustrating that those who do not have religious convictions are constantly rolling their eyes at those who have a particular faith. You are a hypocrite.
And I'm pretty sure Emeli would not be offended that people think her song is about God.

    2. Maja don't be an idiot, how stupid can you be to talk about christians when you are sharing your opinion that there is no god. Think before you post because your gullibility will cost you. Foolish girl!!!!

    3. She mentions the devil, so that gives it more of chance of being about Jesus, Maja. Whether it is or not she is clearly a believer, so that puts you out. I suppose you believe in the devil, but not God, right? You're his slave and you don't even know it.

  4. dear christians, just because it makes more sense to YOU that the song is about god doesn't mean that the songwriter had god or jesus in mind when they wrote this. you can't go around telling people what this song is supposed to mean to them. your argumentation is so preposterous. many people actually are perfectly happy with their 'imperfect' relationships and don't feel the need to go around chasing after a perfect, higher power because they feel content with what they have here on planet earth and they aren't so stupid to compare their partners to god. so get over it!

    3. She mentions the devil, so that gives it more of chance of being about Jesus. Whether it is or not she is clearly a believer, so that makes you completely wrong.

    4. She says in interviews that it's about her fiancé. Said and done from the artist herself. Now seriously guys. Shut up. No one cares whether your not a believer and these Christians annoy you to bells end. Or whether you are able to find your god in every place. It's great you find your god in songs and you can relate to them. That's the point of artists when they write songs. They should be related to the listeners... And to everyone who are giving crap to the Christians. Seriously.. We get it.. To not about god. That's great. Yu don't need to slam other people's religions because of it. There, there. I may have hurt your feelings. But build a bridge and get over it

  5. I think you as an artist it is a blessing if the listener takes something from the words they write. Whether you take the first part of the song which is clearly about a mortal person or the latter verses which could be applied to ones faith, the power of the song is palpable. I say in these turbulent and troubling times it perfectly acceptable to simply enjoy the uplifting and positive message embodied in the song without arguing about what it means.

  6. I have no idea what the writer intended to write about... I hear say it's about her fiancé - great! It's a beautiful and inspirational song and it's sung with passion... I love it. Got to say however that it took me straight to Jesus parable of the prodigal son http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+15%3A11-32&version=NIV and reminds me of the grace and forgiveness I've received from the amazing loving God who is only ever a prayer away, only requires us to turn to face Him to find him and who promises never to leave us of forsake us. I'm humbled and thankful. It's cool that a song can have such impact!

  8. Maja...If what you say is right, then you might be wrong. (50/50!?) Wouldn't most choose to know the Lord and be right than to find out what you will find out when it's your time to face your creator? He loves you know matter how you feel about Him. He gave you free will that you are so obviously using. Strange that you opened your statement with "oh lord". He is real. I'll pray that one day you will know Him and accept Him.
I think the song is great by the way. I have no idea who she's referring too, but she sings it beautifully!

  10. I LOVE this song!!! And I feel this song could take on a personal meaning to each individual. I am a christian and I can see the God interpretation, but one of our greatests gifts from God is supposed to be our spouse. Personally I take it as my spouse. But I feel it is interpreting the one that will be by your side through everything.

  19. I think everybody is right! The song about her fiance being by her side, and its also about Jesus being there for her and with her, even when the world and everything in it passes away. A good husband is supposed to treat his wife the way Jesus treats his bride, the church. She has found a good man, and has a loving and trusting relationship with God!

  20. None of us can be 100% certain about who its about unless we ask the writer... But it does sound as though "him" is referring to God... I enjoy it either way...

  22. Yes, the song is definitely, most definitely referring to a man in her life. The fact that she says in her lyrics, "Rolling dice or staying out til' 3" , this shows that it is a human act, and not a religious one. It cannot be god or jesus that she speaks about because these words represent human actions, and so do her other lyrics... Therefore, there shouldn't have even been a debate about the " person" or " power" for whom she speaks about. It's quite obvious it's a man, most likely her lover.

  23. "When all I need's a hand to stop the tears from falling"- He wipes the tears off her face. ( God has not shown to physically do that).
"You won't ever find him be unfaithful"- You won't find him cheating on her with other women " sex".
" You will find him next to me"- He will be by her side, no matter how bad or good things get.

I am religious myself (to an extent), but I do not blind myself, and I chose to have an open mind when analyzing everything. This to me is obviously a man.

  25. I can see how this song could easily be about a loving and faithful partner, but I can also see how it could be about Jesus. I was blessed enough to have a good and faithful husband, but as he was dying and once he was gone, I felt Jesus there next to me comforting me and helping to ease my pain.

"ill be your clown " makes my heart break and i still havent checked the lyrics out yet ...to me Emeli is a living Angel voice..."read all about it"come on her soul is so easy to read...what a beautiful feeling listening to this lady...i love you EMELI.....didnt know how to register not to good on this stuff... my name is Shayne FROM South Africa

  29. Poor pathetic women who believe that there are no men in this world as described in the song. Well, it must be about god. Look around, your "god" does not exist, our creators are not gods of love and peace, but of terror, destruction, suffering....... wars over oil, animals raised in cages only to be mutilated and slaughtered, people mutilated and slaughtered..... Read the bible, learn about "god," he doesn't exist, that one at least does not exist. it is so sad and scary how religion alone had caused so much of these problems in our world. Religions keep the world divided. Congrats

    1. Umm yeah... I'm not Christian but still the stuff a lot of u r saying is just ridiculous and offensive to...everyone. look it's a good song it could be about anything. To be honest artists don't care about how you interpret the song artist of any kind want more than anything to do what they love and make ppl feel and think. And guys most of you aren't even talking about the song too. But the point is... if it's about god or jeesus or a man or a dog or whatever it doesn't matter. Emeli didn't want you to start a war about it she wanted you to enjoy it. So if you like this song I don't care who you r go on your electronic whatever it is and listen to this song don't even think about the meaning. Peace out ppl! <3

  34. I believe since the very first time I heard this sing that it is about Jesus. I also agree with 'TrustCHRIST' if this song was indeed about a human being then it would imply that the theoretical person is has loyal, loving, fearless, immune to temptation, and financially carefree as God himself (even Jesus was tempted, afraid and uncertain). Being that half if the things in the song has yet to occur (versus 4&5) I don't see how anyone would honestly believe that another human would not also "lose their head" and remain next to them. Unless it their Mother and there is no 100‰ guarantee with that.
