I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz
When I look into your eyes,
It's like watching the night sky or a beautiful sunrise,
There's so much they hold and just like them old stars,
I see that you've come so far,
to be right where you are,
How old is your soul?
CHORUS:
I won't give up on us,
even if the skies get rough.
I'm giving you all my love.
I'm still looking up.
And when you're needing your space,
to do some navigating,
I'll be here, patiently waiting,
to see what you find.
'Cause even the stars they burn,
some even fall to the earth.
We got a lot to learn.
God knows we're worth it.
No, I won't give up.
I don't want to be someone who walks away so easily.
I'm here to stay and make the difference that I can make.
Our differences, they do a lot to teach us,
how to use the tools and gifts we got,
yeah, we got a lot at stake and in the end you're still my friend.
At least we did intend for us to work.
We didn't break, we didn't burn.
We had to learn, how to bend, without the world, caving in.
I had to learn, what I've got and what I'm not and who I am.
CHORUS
I'm still looking up.
Well, I won't give up on us.
(No, I'm not giving up.)
God knows I'm tough, he knows.
(I am tough, I am love.)
We got a lot to learn.
(We're life, we are love.)
God knows we're worth it.
(And we're worth it.)
CHORUS
When I look into your eyes,

Meaning, Main Idea, and Message of The Song
Loving someone needs strong determination and commitment. Without determination and commitment, it is impossible the love can last long or forever. Why? You may ask. It's because loving, and living with, someone who is different from us, in term of point of view, taste, lifestyle, etc., will present us with many unpredictable things. You want to watch movies and your spouse wants to watch cooking program. Even such simple difference can cause big problems. In order to successfully deal with problems arising from the difference, strong determination and commitment to the initial intention of loving the spouse are needed. With the presence of those two things, when the spouse wants to watch cooking program, you may say to yourself "well, the cooking program is more important not only for her but also for me. By watching the program, she can make special cook for me." And so the argument is avoided.
Based on the complete lyric of the song above, the strong determination and commitment seems to be the main idea of the song. You can see that idea in all verses of the song. Even the title itself briefly tells us the idea.
The first verse depicts the man's admiration to the girl he loves. He admires the girl for her beauty which he likens as night sky and a beautiful sunrise. But, what makes him adore her more is the girl's struggle to be right where she is now. It is the admiration to the girl which seems to me has contributed to his determination.
The second verse, the chorus part, clearly shows us his dtermination and commitment to love his girl. "Even if the skies get rough, I'm giving you all my love," so the line goes. Of course the "even if the skies get rough" part is figurative in nature which I interpret as a very bad situation between him and his girl. It may include the situation where his girl as an affair. Even in such circumstance he will give his love to her.
The third verse tells us that the man will give space to the girl when she needs to be alone. He will wait patiently. It can only be done by those who is committed to the love. Meanwhile, the fourth and fifth verses disclose the reason why he does all that. He doesn't want to be someone who walks so easily. With all the situation and differences, as long as they are determined and committed to the relationship, they got a lot to learn. Loving is learning.
Well, that's my interpretation of Jason Mraz's I Won't Give Up song. Feel free to comment. Your comments are highly appreciated.

ReplyDeleteI thought that it has a deeper meaning, perhaps of a new relationship with God & his faith.
ReplyDeletequite agree :)

DeleteI do not think it's necessarily the love of a couple, but just to stay alive a relationship with God with my mother or anyone else is the most important court did not give up continue to want this the beginning of wisdom

I also thought it was about God! That's why I googled it. The background voices keep saying 'I am tough, I am loved, We're alive, We are loved!' I think it's a dual meaning song. It is about relationship love and his relationship with God. Sometimes when we struggle with one of those, we struggle with both.
DeleteI think it is about his relationship with his ex-fiance, or at least the idea of their relationship/similar relationships. The first part is expressing what he loves about her, and about his admiration for what she has accomplished. That makes him wonder how she could do all that and be so young - so he feels that she is older in spirit than in age.
ReplyDeleteThe next part is about a rocky patch in their relationship and his commitment to not give up in bad times. I think the next part is about him allowing her space to find out who she is without him - who she is as a person and who she wants to be, and expressing his commitment to allow her to do that because he loves her.
I interpret the next part to be acknowledgement that they have a good thing, but that even good things can have issues, and do not always work.
The next part is about him not wanting to quit and wanting to put everything he has into making it work before he makes the decision to walk away, followed by him learning about himself and expressing what he has learned from the relationship, and acknowledgement that, even if it doesn't work, they will remain friends and be thankful for what they have. He follows it up with some optimism / hope for the future.
...just my 2 cents.

While I did agree that it was about holding faith and the relationship with God there are a few lines that he makes God seem a third party in the lyrics such as
ReplyDelete"God knows we're worth it."
Why I like music we can all find so many meanings in a song.
My honest opinion, I think this is about a relationship between a man and a younger woman (with age difference). The woman seems to have gone through many things in her life for someone who is young. When he talks about her eyes, "there's so much they hold" meaning there's a lot of story and history in them. "I see that you've come so far" meaning she has flourished as a person, she's accomplished and overcome so many obstacles. "How old is your soul?" which means her soul is much older, wiser, than her actual age. Like she has been on earth and experienced things way before her time. He is saying that life is good and they are content, and he won't give up no matter what, EVEN if things get rough. "When you're needing your space" this is space to figure out who the woman is, what she wants to do, and finding herself and her place in the world. They have differences and overcame many obstacles with their age difference, but they learned and most importantly, they never gave up on each other, ever, which is the basis of the song. "Learn how to bend without having the world caving in" they had to learn to fight fair but still worked it out and didn't give up even when there were obstacles along the way.
ReplyDeleteThis is me and my fiance's wedding song. He is 34 and I am 23 (11 years age difference). We were in current relationships when we met, however, we fell in love. We broke it off with the others, and decided we wanted each other. (I was 18, he was 28) We had a lot to overcome and learn, but we never gave up on each other. Our families accepted us and supported us. 6 years later, we are getting married and very much in love. "You've come so far to be where you are" <I was adopted from the Philippines, and came to the US when I was 9. Half way across the world, and we found each other. God made this happen, he blessed us. The age is never an issue, but I am fresh out of college and still finding my way, and he lets me do that. My support. In a selfish way, we believe this song was written for us. We're getting married in 3 months and we can't wait to dance to this song. It has so much meaning to us <3 <3 <3
ITS about him loving a girl and shes beautiful and amazing but yet nothing is perfect and they might have differences but no matter what they have to stick together and not give up beacuse god knows they are worth it. They have alot to learn because its not all about rainbows and fairys, its much more than that and he saying he wont walk away so easlily hes here to stay. In the end no matter what when they fight after they still love eachother. They have to learn how to bend without the world caving in. That they shouldnt break up or end a relationship over a fight because when you love someone you Wont give up. . .LYT
ReplyDeleteThey say it's a song he thought of when he had an idea of suicide
ReplyDeleteAgreed. This is my interpretation:
DeleteI started thinking it was about a guy patiently waiting for his girl to be ready to be loved but the more I listened to it, the more I started thinking that it could possibly be about a person struggling with life's challenges and uphill battles.
At the beginning, there is no denying that the person in question is professing his love/gratitude/admiration towards the other person by seeing the night sky and sunrise through looking into their eyes. But where I started seeing deeper meaning was after he sings "there's so much they hold". There's always more that meets the eye and everyone has a different life experience and perspective in life.
He continues by saying "I see that you've come so far", this could be interpreted as over coming personal battles/struggles. Jason Mraz continues by saying "to be right where you are. How old is your soul?" - so even if this person is young, mid aged or older, clearly he or she has lived a mile of experience and climbed an uphill battle, more than their own years could consider.
He proceeds with the chorus which I believe means that even after everything the person in question has been through and made the person feel, that person will stay by their side regardless and won't give up. He won't give up on them, he will always love and keep faith.
Then he says that even when time gets rough, he'll be patiently waiting while the person in question needs to soul search "to do some navigating".
Then he says "'cause even the stars they burn some even fall on the earth. We've got a lot to learn, God knows we're worth it", meaning even the best have bad days and fall down, we're not perfect but we were placed on this earth with a purpose and we can make it if pushed through.
He proceeds by saying "I'm here to stay and make the difference that I can make", meaning I'm always going to be your side and help guide and love you as much as I can.
Then he says "our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use our tools and gifts we got yeah, we got a lot at stake", meaning we are placed here on earth with each our individual strength and purpose and it's up to us to use them to fulfill our destiny.
Then he says "and in the end, you're still my friend at least we did intend for us to work, we didn't break, we didn't burn. We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in" meaning, if there's anything to grab in this is our strong friendship even with all of the elements and challenges that life throws our way. We didn't lose site of who we are as friends even with the pressures of life. And right after he adds "I had to learn what I got, and what I'm not, and who I am" meaning, even he had soul searching to do and their precious friendship assisted in understanding his limitations and his worth.
Then he says "God knows I'm tough (I am tough, and I am loved). We've got a lot to learn (we're alive, we are loved). God knows we're worth it (And we're worth it)" meaning, that even if this friendship can get tough and throws challenges his way, he can take it because he's tough because God built him that way. And he will feel supported even with that added burden because he is loved. Also, he mentions we are always learning, meaning no one is perfect. We are alive and need to remember we have a purpose and when times get rough remember we are loved.
In the grand scheme of things, I believe it's about a loved one that is struggling with depression and contemplating the bigger questions about why we are here on this earth.
I feel its a song for any deep relationship in our lives ...parents..children...friends ...and yes a couple ...people that don't give up on u are the treasures of the world
ReplyDeleteI recently had a daughter after having two sons. I was afraid that I could not love a daughter the same. However the moment they placed her in my arms I immediately felt a new love like none other I've never known and I love her more than I could have ever dreamed. I just now hope that she will never go through a time in her life that she "hates" me like some mother-daughter relationships unfortunately experience. But if there is ever a time that our relationship goes on a rocky path I just want her to know that I will never give up on us and that I love her and am here for her....forever. I just adore her. So I don't think this song only pertains to couples but also can be about other deep relationships.
ReplyDeleteI think this song is about a couple going through mid life, and the mid life crisis stigma that plagues couples in their forties and fifties. The beginning where he mentions old stars and she has come so far. I think he is referring to a long term relationship and the fact that even though they are older, her soul keeps her young. When he refers to patiently waiting, I think he could be referring to the fact that when you hit that age you reflect back and feel like you missed out on life and it makes you do crazy things sometimes, like have affairs and stuff and search for your youth. He is waiting for her to get through her pain of letting go of her youth and shows he is dedicated to their love during this time of their lives. We've got a lot to learn...you never stop learning about each other no matter how long you have been together. He figures out who he is by standing by her side while she gets through this, and figures out how strong his love really is. God knows I'm tough enough...tough enough to weather through anything when you truly love someone.
ReplyDeleteI just wish I could put my feelings to words like this. It touched me to tears, hit me from no where. It feels that whatever your meaning is to the song, it is a great expression of emotion
ReplyDeletenkaka'inspired naman po tlGa ng message ng song natUe!! much much <3 ko <^^,>
ReplyDelete----> LEN :-)
I'm almost certain this song is about Marfan Syndrome. Its a very rare disease that Jason Mraz, and everyone in the video, has which he has tried to conceal all his life. Michael Phelps is also someone with a mild case of this syndrome. Not a lot of people are aware of this disorder and if not treated can lead to serious heart and liver problems. Please do your own research and spread the word!
ReplyDeleteI see the meaning as in Faith and GOD...when the boy was exploring hearing the part about ill be waiting to see what u find and i feel its how GOD feels seeing us through the things in LIFE cause we ALL know life isnt easy but its how WE live it and get through it. GOD knows we're worth it and WE wont give up.....MAKE A DIFFERENCE its up to US to make this world better and its obvious GOD hasnt given up. All the different people in the video is showing HE is talking about EVERYONE....NOT just race wealth or favorites....its by who YOU are....I could be wrong but its what the song makes me feel by watching the video and just sitting back listening!
ReplyDeletei agree it is about mankind and our struggles.
Deletewhat if a guy attempted to flirt on a social networking sight with a girl but at the same time he is committed to his girlfriend and his girlfriend didn't have an idea that her boy was flirting? then few days later, his girlfriend found out that her boy was cheating on her and she's really mad, but without even thinking because of too much anger and pain on the part of his girlfriend, his girlfriend shouted at him and said "I'm breaking up with you!" the guy was just only attempted to flirt but no meet ups happened. he truly love his girlfriend a lot. that day during the breakup it was their 6th month that they were together. in the Philippines, couples are celebrating what you called "monthsary" the day that they started to be gf & bf and the next month is their monthsary same date since the day they were ON.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this song is about an older man and his young wife. The song plays as video slide of their years together during his funeral. This song is meant to comfort her and remind her that although he lost his battle with cancer, he is still with her in spirit, just as it was meant for him as she remained by his side until the end.
ReplyDeleteI love this song. This is absolutely related to me and my long term boyfriend. Let me share our story with you. I am 22 years old, and he is 29 years old (7 years of age gap). We are more than two (2) years in a relationship. I love him so dearly that I even sacrificed a lot for him. We are now in a long distance relationship. The thing the he did is that he cheated on me, though there's nothing happen to them, still I was really hurt. I couldn't imagined what he had done. The worse part is that my family is the one who found out first before me. I was really depressed and stressed that time. I found some space, didn't have any communications with him or anyone. After a week, I broke up with him and decided to open my doors to everyone. He almost accepted it but he just couldn't do it. He couldn't let me go. His family loves me so much that even them scolded him for what he has done to me. He already talked to my mother. He accepted everything they said, and apologized for what he did. And the thing he realized the most is the things my mother told him about my great love for him. Then he realized what he did is very wrong. "I did a big mistake, but nothings changed, I love you still", he said. He couldn't let me go. It's so painful. I still love the person. We really do have a bad situation. Lots of gossips from everyone. My mother don't like him anymore, but he's still welcome to our home as a friend. I accept that we are not perfect even the relationship. This is a big trial for us. I don't know what to do. I just lean to God for everything. He is in the Philippines and I am in abroad. Currently, we are good and steady. No one knows, only the two of us. He wants to come with me here in abroad. He wants to be with me. He wants to open everything for me. He is really sorry for what he did and promise not to do it again. He couldn't let me go. He loves me, I know that. I always pray to God. If he is really for me, then that will be good. Only God knows what will happen in the future... in our future... This is the song he dedicated for me. And every time I hear this song, I almost cry.
ReplyDeleteI won't give up on us, even if the skies get rough.
DeleteAnd when you're needing your space, to do some navigating,
I'll be here, patiently waiting.
I don't want to be someone who walks away so easily.
I'm here to stay and make the difference that I can make.
Our differences, they do a lot to teach us,
At least we did intend for us to work.
We didn't break, we didn't burn.
We had to learn, how to bend, without the world, caving in.
I'm still looking up.
I won't give up on us.
God knows I'm tough, He knows.
We got a lot to learn.
God knows we're worth it.
NO, I won't give up.
A VERY NICE MESSAGE FROM YOUR PARTNER IN TIMES OF TRIALS. <3 <3 <3
Yeshua Ha’Mashiach the Messiah, Jesus Christ put this song on my heart tonight and I ended up on this page reading the comments. After reading the last comment I looked at the time and it was 3:18- the value of Christ. Strongs concordance in Greek for 318 is necessity. I pray everyone who reads this is blessed.
