Rumour Has It - Adele
She, she ain't real,
She ain't gonna be able to love you like I will,
She is a stranger,
You and I have history,
Or don't you remember?
Sure, she's got it all,
But, baby, is that really what you want?
Bless your soul, you've got your head in the clouds,
You made a fool out of you,
And, boy, she's bringing you down,
She made your heart melt,
But you're cold to the core,
Now rumour has it she ain't got your love anymore,
Rumour has it, ooh (8x)
She is half your age,
But I'm guessing that's the reason that you strayed,
I heard you've been missing me,
You've been telling people things you shouldn't be,
Like when we creep out and she ain't around,
Haven't you heard the rumours?
Bless your soul, you've got your head in the clouds,
You made a fool out of me,
And, boy, you're bringing me down,
You made my heart melt, yet I'm cold to the core,
But rumour has it I'm the one you're leaving her for,
Rumour has it, ooh (8x)
All of these words whispered in my ear,
Tell a story that I cannot bear to hear,
Just 'cause I said it, it don't mean that I meant it,
People say crazy things,
Just 'cause I said it, don't mean that I meant it,
Just 'cause you heard it,
Rumour has it, ooh (15x)
But rumour has it he's the one I'm leaving you for
She, she ain't real,
She ain't gonna be able to love you like I will,

Meaning, Main Idea, and Message of The Song
Based on the lyric of the song above, I conclude that this song tells us about a girl's agony caused by her best friend who she secretly loves. It's not clearly stated in the lyric whether or not the boy loves her in return. What's clear is that he falls in love with another girl who is much younger than him. That's why she was in agony. She thinks that it's only her who deserves to love him since she has known him and he has known her. They have been together (as best friends) for a long time.
But what happens is different. The boy has chosen another girl. Keeping in her mind that she is the best for him, she insists to think that he has made wrong decision. Making such decision, in her opinion, means making fool out of himself. It has made her down.
To this point, everything is the fact. It is the fact that the boy falls in love with another girl. It is the fact that she is down. But, the next line, in my opinion, begins to talk about something other than fact. It's about the girl's expectation. So, she expects that the decision is wrong. She expects that the girl he has chosen would make him down. She wishes that he misses her. She wishes that she ain't got his love anymore. And finally, she expects that he will leave the girl for her. Yes, the lyric uses the word rumour. And I guess the rumour actually refers to her expectation.
Well, that's my interpretation of Adele's Rumous Has It song. What do you say?
I still can't interpret the last line: "rumour has it he's the one im leaving you for". That line changes the entire meaning of the song, dont you think?
ReplyDeleteI think the song is about Adele falling in love with a boy. This boy likes another girlfriend. The boy now wants Adele. This all happened because of something that Adele said. Tried off this boy, Adele gets another boyfriend.

ReplyDeleteProbably it means that Adele has got another Boyfriend and now she has realised that she shudn't bother for that guy who left her for a younger girl ,so as an eye to an eye,she also made another boyfriend in order to start a new Life as he did..
ReplyDeleteI think it means that he is falling in love with her but is scared of love or maybe they are good friends and he has more feelings for her but she doesn't, and he doesn't want to lose that friendship
ReplyDeleteI meant to comment on the too close song and it put it on here
ReplyDeleteI think it means that he is falling in love with her but is scared of love or maybe they are good friends and he has more feelings for her but she doesn't, and he doesn't want to lose that friendship
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought of this possibility:
ReplyDeleteI think it may well mean that even though he is now with someone younger she feels he still is wanting to leave the one he is with, for her, (the singer), because she, personally feels she is far more interesting and experienced and he has been connected with her and he has been connected with her almost continually so they have a chemistry and a history. She knows this and feels a confidence that she has more to offer him actually, for his happiness, and feels fairly certain he is making the wrong decision and also is not as happy with the present lover (an intuitive hunch? she has, plus she may know something about him that is a secret between them; and they may have recently reaquainted in some wayor casually somewhere for old time's sake recently, perhaps conjuring up wishful thinking, hence the rumor ideas whispering to her). This is painful to her as it brings upheaval in her heart. She cannot bear to hear these things she thinks of, because it means that it is not settled or written in stone and so she thinks to herself, "maybe he isn't really happy, since he is seems to possibly be missing me" This means she may not be able to move on with her life so quickly and she really needs to stop waiting on him....so she then decides in her mind that she will fabricate a rumor that she has already met someone else and isn't pining over him or missing him." So, the line,"Rumor has it he's the one I'm leaving you for" seems strange because they have already broken up, but she has the rumour in her mind. In other words, as she realizes she hasn't left him in her mind and decides to leave him more literally by making a rumor that she has someone else (made up only in her own mind to comfort her or actually is someone), even though she stills has hope and feels that in time he will definitely wish for her. She decides it isn't worth the long term suffering and compulsion of longing for him and so she is starting her own internal (words whisper to her that she cannot bear) or external rumor in order to set this distancing into motion. Also, hence the words, just because I said it doesn't mean I meant it...meaning if he tries hard enough to get her back it would be possible, in spite of all the rumours circulationg. Hint...hint..her own rumours she has started herself.
Then, I came up with another, much more conniving one: This is very significant: when she says "you're cold to the core" she also states she is "cold to the core" so I think this means she is actually starting a rumour to break them up and it is circulating..she is wondering if he has heard that he is leaving her for the (singer/voice). But then, she is making a rumour that she is seeing someone else also, "rumour has it he's the one I'm leaving you for". She is going to start a rumour that she has someone else waiting in the wings if he does not choose her.
Additional insight of possible meaning:
ReplyDeleteShe may not actually want him back now. She states that she is cold to the core and that he is too. This is evidenced by the way she seems to be preparing herself for when he may find out that she has most likely been the one starting the rumours. The rumours are that they are secretly meeting while the other woman is away, rumours to try to break up his present relationship with the other woman; which is obviously for her own purposes and intentions, by her words that say "just 'cause I said it doesn't mean I meant it,just 'cause you heard it" This could mean that she doesn't have someone else, and also that she does not wish to be accused of the rumours either. Clever that she actually says, "Just 'cause I said it." So she is possibly admitting to being the rumour starter, not others.
Realizing this meaning adds a decidedly sinister tone to the entire song. She may not be planning on being with him after all, as she seemingly has someone else if her plan fails; to take the sting away from losing him forever. She apparently is possibly seeking revenge and/or reconciliation but doubts she can trust him now and is getting herself prepared for the inevitable and whatever further develops from the circumstances. This is how it seems as I now interpret it.
It means that hes too close to what makes him happy and what he wants. Love is a close but not a priority
