Payphone - Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa

CHORUS 1
I'm at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone
Baby it's all wrong, where are the plans we made for two?

Yeah, I, I know it's hard to remember
The people we used to be
It's even harder to picture
That you're not here next to me
You say it's too late to make it
But is it too late to try?
And in our time that you wasted
All of our bridges burned down

BRIDGE
I've wasted my nights
You turned out the lights
Now I'm paralyzed
Still stuck in that time when we called it love
But even the sun sets in paradise

CHORUS
I'm at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone
Baby it's all wrong, where are the plans we made for two?
If happy ever after did exist
I would still be holding you like this
All those fairytales are full of sh*t
One more stupid love song I'll be sick

You turned your back on tomorrow
Cause you forgot yesterday
I gave you my love to borrow
But just gave it away
You can't expect me to be fine
I don't expect you to care
I know I've said it before
But all of our bridges burned down

BRIDGE
CHORUS

Now I'm at a payphone...

[Wiz Khalifa]
Man work that sh*t
I'll be out spending all this money while you sitting round
Wondering why it wasn't you who came up from nothing
Made it from the bottom
Now when you see me I'm stunning
And all of my cars start with the push up a button
Telling me the chances I blew up or whatever you call it
Switched the number to my phone
So you never could call it
Don't need my name on my show
You can tell it I'm ballin'
Swish, what a shame could have got picked
Had a really good game but you missed your last shot
So you talk about who you see at the top
Or what you could've saw
But sad to say it's over for
Phantom pulled up valet open doors
Wiz like go away, got what you was looking for
Now ask me who they want
So you can go and take that little piece of sh*t with you

CHORUS

Now I'm at a payphone...

Meaning, Main Idea, and Message of The Song

Based on the complete lyric of the song above, I conclude that this Maroon 5 feat. Wiz Khalifa's Payphone song tells us about a man's grieve and anger after being left behind by his lover. He still loves the girl and always remembers all the dreams they once shared. Meanwhile, the girl has decided to look at tomorrow instead of being stuck in yesterday: going separate way. The reason for her to make such a decision is not clearly stated in the lyric. But, whatever it is, the man blames the girl for what happened. In his opinion, it is what she did and not what he did that has led their relationship to separation. Therefore, along with the grieve, he is so furious. So angry he is that he claims fairytales and love song (both always ends with happily ever after) are full of shit and make him sick.

  1. Hmmm. That's also what I think. Kinda tells us what the vocalist has gone through in real life.

  4. Not what I think. She was his everything and now even though successful and moving on it all means nothing to him. He isn't fine, He's lost his identity. Payphone represents trying to communicate with her but he can't call home because he no longer has a home. Even though he's on top if you listen to the rapper Wiz, he is so sad about the shattered dream. He no longer believes in fairy tales or happy ever after. He's wiser but sadder. She left him for an inferior little s--t according to rapper Wiz. Now the world wants him but I guess he using her as material for his song.

    4. Thankyou pinamia! everyone always sees the obvious parts of songs but there is always something more hidden behind it all. but i think touch missed a few points. This man was obviously in love with this woman and thought she felt the same. he thought they would spent eternity together so he did everything he could to keep her happy. he bought her anything and he gave her all his love. they made plans for their future and he had no idea she was cheating. then when he found out he drove to get his anger out broke down and had no more money so he couldn't call. he was angry and didn't know what to do with himself. he says he use to believe in fairy tales but after her not so much and that love songs mean nothing and they are just a bunch of s**t and thither still wants her as his own. he is a sad man who lost his love. and yea it seems mabey he has no home anymore and no more money and no family or anything cause all his money was spent on her and all his life was her. he is broken and lost. that's my definition to this wonderful heart breaking song.

  8. I think Adam Levine wrote this song about his ex-girlfriend. The song was released this month, the same month he broke up with Anne Vyalitsyna.

  9. the video is irrelevant to the meaning of the song, IMO the song is referring to a break up, the reference to 'home' refers to him wanting to get back to normal but he has spent so much time (change in the song)on the girl/relationship that its hard for him to go back to normal.

We then see his anger at the girl, 'Baby it's all wrong, where are the plans we made for two?' highlighting he believed he had a future and again a reference to how much he put into the relationship

Wiz's part represents that self confidence and that part of us that motivates us to get over the relationship and for us to get back to normal

  10. I have actually just watched the video and may have found a link to the meaning of the song

at the start of the video, he is willing to risk his life to save her, highlighting the strong love he feels for her and then we see them split half way through the video (perhaps highlighting a break up) this is when the trouble starts

we see problems coming at him from every angle, with police cars appearing from every where and he then has to swerve in the car to try and get back on track and avoid them, these represent the problems he is facing after the relationship showing how hard it is for. We then see the end of the video and the car exploding, perhaps signalling an end to the relationship and then with him going to the payphone showing he just wants to get back to normal

its a very vague link but one that fits

  12. "all of my change I've spent on you" a reference to his efforts to improve or be a what she wanted.

  13. "I'm at a payphone trying to call home", so why not a cellphone trying to call home? Think about when you have used a payphone and how you felt...this feeling is what the writer wants you to feel...just like the protagonist.

  14. it's mainly about that he dis everything for her & she left him & now hes just trying to call home but all of his change he used it up talking to her

  15. We see him in the beginning of the video when he shuts and throws his phone away in the fire perhaps because it hasn't got any change left in it... I thought that's why he used the payphone instead of the cellphone...

    ReplyDelete
  16. maybe he used the cell phone because she wouldnt accept his calls....I believe all of the change spent....means all of the money he spent on her,,,only to be disappointed

  17. But why payphone??? Wouldn't minutes on a cell phone be more up-to-date????

  19. I was listening to this song while reminiscing about my ex, and i could relate to his feelings. My ex-gf left me when she did not really been honest about herself. I had spent my whole money on her and there she went lying to my face. So I just decided to let her go and bring all our memories with her.

  20. Maybe he has given and done everything for her so they could have the best in life. She still wasn't satisfied and was thinking she could find better. They could have done some things that were illegal to try and get the "finer things in life" mainly for her and some of those things may have now got the law watching them and he is gonna take all the blame and let her go live her new fairytale. She doesn't know meaning of love or true happiness. He is in jail for crimes and things they both may have did. And he is trying to reach her from jail payphone and she won't except calls and has changed all phone numbers so he can't reach her physically and then pretty much mentally. So he realizes he gave her everything. All of him. His money, his freedom, and life pretty much. So he gets out of jail. Gets his shit together and gets his self back on top the legit, right way. And she sees him happy living a good, happy, fun loving life and wants him and that back but he says hell no. You had it but wanted that other piece of shit so to bad. You got your "grand" prize trophy so go live with it. Stay gone. I'm not letting you take me back again to having to make phone calls from jail on that payphone again.
