A Thousand Years - Christina Perri

Heart beats fast
Colors and prom-misses
How to be brave
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?

But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt
Suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer

CHORUS
I have died every day waiting for you
Darling don't be afraid
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away

What's standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this
One step closer

CHORUS

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

One step closer
One step closer

CHORUS

And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more

Meaning, Main Idea of The Song

Have you ever fallen in love with someone? If you're more than ten years old, and normal, it's more possible than not that you have. Or even so many times :). If you have, what did you feel when you saw or met the one you crushed on? I guess you would feel nervous. Your heart would beat faster than usual. Also, I guess you were afraid of doing something, even a very little thing, which could give bad impression.

That's what this Christina Perri's A Thousand Years song mainly tells. It is about deep feeling the singer has to someone. The feeling has actually come for a long time. However, she is afraid and doubtful. She is not confident with herself, just like all of us when falling in love. And so she hides the feeling. Consequently, romantic relationship between them has not been built, even though there's possibility that the one she adores actually has similar feeling to her.
The song also depicts that after hiding the feeling for long time, one day she saw the boy standing alone. And as usual, her heart beat faster. Yet, different from the other days, that day she decided to revealed anything. She was determined not to lose the moment. "I Will not let anything take away" so the line goes. She made up her mind that whatever will happen, she will let the one she loves know what she feels.

Message of The Song for Us

Of course, the song reflects solely the singer's feeling. It doesn't try to persuade the listeners to do the same. However, as critical persons we should learn something from the song. So what can we learn? Well, as you may know, on message clearly seen in the lyric is that hiding our feeling, especially admiration and love, to those we love or like much will not result anything but the feeling of tortured. It's much better for us just to tell our feeling to those we adore. It doesn't matter how they would respond. I know if they respond negatively to our opennes, we will badly hurt. But, one thing you should remember, the hurt caused by the opennes of our feeling to someone will last much shorter that the one caused by our decision to hide it form him/her. So, tell me you love me if you really love me :D.

Well, that's my interpretation of Christina Perri's A Thousand Years song. Your comments are highly appreciated.

  8. But if you say on a wrong moment, you can loose this person. And maybe this person is amazing! This happened to me and I don`t know how to recover our small friendship.

  9. This song really reminds me of my past feeling to someone. I think anyone can related who happened to have found their true love. You can never relate to this song unless you felt a deep feeling towards a person whether he is your past or present. Thanks a lot of sharing your thoughts on this kind of very deep sentimental song.

  10. Your interpretation is not exactly the same as my interpretation of the song, however, you might be right and I might be wrong or vice versa. Or it could be something that I've noticed something that you didn't or you noticed something that I didn't. The song reflects someone who is so shy to accept and show her feelings to someone, not necessary a crush but someone you longed for. This kind of song usually tells me that no matter how I love the person if I don't show it I would just be someone waiting for nothing. That person might be considered as my one and true love but the feeling of you might be rejected is blocking my step to truly say my feelings.

  12. This song makes me think of my children, and of childbirth. All the talk of bravery, of how beautiful and wonderful the girl is, and how "every hour has come to this"...really encompasses the moments of birthing and raising my girls. I can't listen to the song without bawling my eyes out. :)

    1. I sang this through my last trimester! He's 18 months old now and I couldn't agree more. Such a beautiful sentiment for a momma who waited a long time to have a child. Makes me cry when I try to sing it to him :)

  13. I interpret this differently. I feel I have been longing for this "mystery man" forever. We all have our ideal or dream guy or girl we have always been searching for. Finally you meet them and say, "They're the one!". I feel this way about my current boyfriend, and this song puts it all into words perfectly. I have been through some bad relationships in my past, and been longing for a nice guy for so long. I have learned to be more open and share my feelings, and they are finally reciprocated back to me. This song explains it all right on the head.

  15. This is a song about someone who has loved someone else for a long time and is sending a message to them. Since this appears in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2, we can conclude that from Bella's love for Edward. [The two main lovers in the series] Some of the more striking lines for me are:

How to be brave? How can I love when I'm afraid?
This is a universal lyric, but it holds so much meaning. She/he isn't entirely sure if she wants to go through with something because she/he's afraid, but knows she/he has to.

I will not let anything take away what's standing in front of me.
She's afraid, but wanting to live the moment.

All along I believed I would find you
She's been through lots of troubles, but now she knows she's found him and won't ever loose him.

It's a wedding song as well, I really love it.
